The City was for a period-1732, 1736, 1790 – The home of the seat of Transylvania, in the House Zapolya.
In the writing of the famous "Supplex Libelus Valachorum", submitted to Vienna in 1791, which requested equal rights for the Romanians with other privileged nations of Transylvania, it is mentioned the contribution made by a Romanian, called Vitez, clerk of Sas-Sebes.
As a result of fighting in Sebes in February 4 th and 6 th, 1849, between the garrison in Alba Iulia and avangrada Army of General Bem, the city will be torched and the fortress destroyed. The town suffered great losses and damages.
From June 27 1851, Sebes seat will be given to the Captain of Sibiu, and from 1854 - as a residence of Pretura will be given to the Regional Culture of Sibiu.
During the time, Sebes had suffered not only because of the Turkish invasion, of internal wars, of revolutions and uprisings, but also because of epidemics and natural disasters: eight outbreaks of plague in the XIV-XIX centuries, three epidemics of cholera in XVIII-XIX, one of typhoid fever in the late-nineteenth century, two catastrophic floods in the nineteenth century, the earthquake of 1620, four devastating fires between XV and XIX, and remembered, finally, the hunger of 1815 - 1817. |
